Taking on the musical stage for the first time, Kim Dongwan talked about what his fellow Shinhwa members thought about his role as a transgender rocker.
The “Hedwig” press call was held on the afternoon of 17th May at KT&G Sangsang Art Hall. The 4 actors playing the role of Hedwig – Kim Dongwan, Jo Jung Suk, Kim Jae Wook and Choi Jae Woong – took to the stage dressed as the titular blonde transgender.
After demonstrating some highlights from the show, Kim Dongwan said with a shy laugh, “Getting my makeup done and wearing a dress makes me really embarrassed. But when I’m with the audience, it feels like I’m being hypnotized and I have a lot of fun playing out the scenes.”
This day, Kim Dongwan transformed into the sexy transgender rocker Hedwig, decked out in heavy makeup, a blonde wig and a black miniskirt.
Kim Dongwan said, “When my Hedwig photos were released, the Shinhwa members sent me a group text message. They sent a crying emoticon and said that I must be having a hard time making a living”, and laughed heartily.
Kim Dongwan chose the musical “Hedwig” as his comeback project, and he had this to say, “It’s something that I’ve sort of been wanting to do. There was no reason to hesitate. Rather than to say that I chose this project, it’s more of me being fortunate enough to be able to take on this project. I feel really honoured.”
When asked about any challenges that he faced, he said jokingly, “Honestly, waxing was difficult. It was really painful.”
He added, “Hedwig and I have something in common. I feel a lot of emotions when I am performing “Wig In A Box”. I feel that Hedwig shares a lot of similarities with celebrities.”
Having already done his first show on 14th May, Kim Dongwan said, “There’s a scene at the end when I take off my clothes, signifying my forgiveness. I had a feeling of throwing myself out there, and removing my shell.”
The musical “Hedwig” opened on 14th May and will end its run on 21 August.
